What is Fencing?
Fencing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK. There are three different types of fencing sword – foil, epee and sabre.
Celtic Sword Club specialises in epee, the largest sword, where the whole body is “on target”. We also offer seated fencing and have two specialist fencing wheelchairs and frames.
Fencing can be very rewarding; challenging you both physically and mentally, it develops all-round fitness, flexibility, coordination and mental agility – all whilst playing with swords!
Don't panic! None of the weapons, have pointed tips or sharpened edges (nonetheless specialist fencing kit must be worn whilst fencing).
There are two varieties of each weapon, electrical and non-electrical (steam).
In electrical fencing, fencers and their weapons are wired to electronic scoring apparatus or "box". This enables a hit on an opponent to be registered immediately by the box.
Generally all club and competition fencing uses electrical equipment.
The Kit
All fencers must wear specific fencing uniform to ensure their safety on the piste! Here's a brief summary of what you need (and what we can provide for you if you don't have your own... minus the socks... we recommend getting your own smelly socks!)
